She actually told me I could be on it for the rest of my life without any problems and it's only been about 7 months and I'm in hell. I scheduled to see a different dermatologist today. DO NOT recommend this in the least.
I am a 22 year old girl who has suffered with moderate acne since I was about It is genetic, as my mom has done accutane and had acne into her 40s. I did two full rounds of accutane, once about 4 years ago and then again about 1. Accutane would completely clear my skin very quickly even when I did a low dose the first time, but after about 4 months off of it, it would flare up again.
I switched to Ortho Tri Cyclen birth control about a year ago to try to prevent acne. It cleared my skin instantly, but this only lasted for about 3 months.
Somehow after that time, I began getting pretty intense and cystic flare ups. I was using. I switched dermatologists in an effort to try something new because it was frustrating feeling like my acne always ended up coming back. Since most of my acne was on my chin and occasionally my lower face, she diagnosed it as hormonal acne and prescribed Spironolactone.
I have taken 50 mg for a full month now and believe that the texture of my skin is getting significantly better. I also feel a lot better emotionally. Before, when I would PMS and sometimes just no. After having acne for about 8 years and trying at least 10 different topical and oral medications, I was ready to try Accutane as my last resort but I was nervous.
I tried spironolactone instead and it finally cleared my face up. I went from having 10 pimples at a time to maybe 2 a month. I highly recommend this medication. I am 52 years old and have suffered with deep facial cyst on my chin since I was in my twenties. I have tried many medications, lotions, rinses, etc and nothing seemed to work. I began reading up on medications since I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and came across this drug.
I suggested to my doctor to try it for my skin and high blood pressure. I have been on this medication fro 3 months know and it is a miracle.
I take 2 mg tablets a day. No side affects, My skin in clear and vivid and my blood pressure is under control. Highly recommend Spironolactone. I am a 25 year old female, who spent years upon years suffering from severe cystic acne around my mouth cheeks, chin. No acne face wash or lotion I tried and believe me, I tried them all would help. It was the kind of acne that were lumps under the skin that felt like bruises when touched.
My dermatologist reccommended that I try Spironolactone, to which I agreed because I felt like the acne couldn't have gotten any worse. What an amazing result. I am so proud and that my lucky stars for this stuff!!! A few months ago I went off oral birth control in favor of an IUD. For the first few months of the IUD I didn't notice any major changes in my skin. Then, about months in, boom. I was breaking out all over my chin, jawline and back! It was bad - big, deep, cystic ance.
I tried everything under the sun to make it better- I used OTC acne washes, toners, creams; I changed my pillowcase, I cleansed quickly after workouts to make sure my skin didnt get clogged; I drank more water; face masks Nothing helped, because I was treating the symptoms and not the problem. The problem was that my hormones were all out of whack from the IUD. I made an appointment with a dermatologist and she confirmed that yes, this was hormonal acne and yes she has seen it a lot with women who get an IUD.
She prescribed me some topical treatments Aczone and Tazorac and the spironolactone. The topical treatments helped but only to quicken healing of already present breakouts.
After taking 50mg a day for 5 weeks, I had a followup with my derm and she upped my dosage for mg a day. It wasn't until I had been taki. I am 22 and I have always had moderate acne on my forehead since I was I first started with mg of spiro which caused a horrible initial breakout.
I stopped taking it for 1 month and started it again but on 50mg and it really cleared my skin. Within one month I started getting a terrible headache that lasted 1 week it was so unbearable i stopped taking the pill for a week now and my headache is completely gone.
I don't know if this happened because my diet consists of mostly salt food, but I was seriously scared I thought I had a brain tumor. This pill is a diuretic so maybe it'll work well to those whom have a well balanced diet, but as soon as you feel side effects you should stop it immediately!!!
