When was wing chun founded

The 'shao' comes from the fact the temple is built on Mt. The 'lin' means forest. Although to the untrained eye both symbols look similar, and to the untrained ear they sound similar, they are not the same - it's like saying b and d are the same.

Today, this mountain is located inside Henan province about km mi. The actual Shaolin Temple is located in today's Henan province, this is referred to as "Nothern Shaolin" by martial artists. This temple has been burned down and ransacked many times in its centuries long history. Apparently, the Qing burnt the Temple for its anti-Qing activities and this MAY have taken place in , or about 30 years later , or about years later.

One hundred years is a pretty wide margin of error, in my opinion. Adding to the confusion, it's not clear historically speaking, whether it was just the 'Northern' Shaolin Temple, or the supposed 'Southern' Shaolin Temple, or both that were burned down by the Qing.

Everyone agrees historians and martial artists , if there ever was a Southern Shaolin Temple, it was never rebuilt like the main one in Henan province. On top of that, during the bloody year conquest of the Qing over the Ming, it's easy to assume a lot of temples, homes, businesses, documents, and towns were burned and destroyed.

That's half a century of chaos,. One Chinese website quotes two Shaolin abbots disagreeing on its existence. This is where the "official" story of Wing Chun should begin Even so, the 's Wing Chun story isn't as clear as we would all like it to be. What we could say with some level of confidence is during this time a connection between Wing Chun and the Red Boat Opera took hold.

Instead they say Wing Chun comes from the melding of different martial artists working as Red Boat Opera actors some of them using this job as a cover for their revolutionary activities. In any case, the s is about when the Dragon Pole weapon and form note : many variations of the form, like most Wing Chun forms , exist got incorporated into Wing Chun. In other words, it's the one form that looks the least like Wing Chun to me.

It would seem the Dragon Pole came from somewhere else entirely, giving credence to the Red Boat people. This period of history is commonly known as the Manchu Dynasty. The oral history of the style states that one of the Five Elders of the Shaolin Temple — a female Abbess named Ng Mui — developed the founding principles of the art following her completed studies of the more traditional, animal-influenced Shaolin styles and the Fujian White Crane style of Kung-Fu.

Her own experiences during both armed and unarmed engagements vs. Allegedly, Ng Mui had cause to teach her new, as yet unnamed method to a young woman named Yim Wing Chun to help her overcome the attentions of an unwanted suitor. Yim proved to be an excellent student, mastering the principles sufficiently to emerge victorious from her challenge match and thus uphold the honour of her family and her teacher.

From the conception of the art until the early 19th century, we only have oral histories to study. These inevitably contain many variations and discrepancies, and are widely interspersed with folklore, legend and embellishment.

However from the 19th Century onwards we encounter the first written histories of the style, beginning with Dr. Already enjoying widespread popularity throughout Asia, the style began to spread and be studied across Europe, the USA and the Western nations. Before his travels to the USA and his subsequent rise to fame through his groundbreaking movies, Bruce Lee spent a short period studying Wing Chun under Ip Man who was, and still is arguably the most famous Master of the art to date. In the story of Ip Man Yip Man was adapted into a superb three-part movie featuring many stars of martial cinema, some wonderful fight choreography, and the excellent Donnie Yen playing the role of Grandmaster Ip Man.

The second part of the movie was released in April , the third part in late — featuring none other than the ex-world champion boxer Mike Tyson in a villainous role. Although Bruce Lee went on to explore his own path via his Jeet Kune Do philosophy, these developments drew heavily upon the Wing Chun style.

This is not to detract from his many achievements — indeed without his huge contribution the world of martial arts would be in a very different situation today — a situation which finds the art of Wing Chun Kung-Fu enjoying enormous popularity and development within the martial arts world, not least here in the United Kingdom. Then she challenged the bully to a fight and beat him. Ng Mui later traveled around the country, but before she left she told Wing Chun to strictly honor the Kung Fu traditions, to develop her Kung Fu after her marriage, and to help the people working to overthrow the Manchu government and restore the Ming Dynasty.

He in turn passed these techniques on to Leung Lan Kwai. Together they shared and improved their techniques, and thus the Six-and-a-half-point Long Pole was incorporated into Wing Chun Kung Fu. Leung Jan grasped the innermost secrets of Wing Chun, attaining the highest level of proficiency. Many Kung Fu masters came to challenge him, but all were defeated. Leung Jan became very famous. It can thus be said that the Wing Chun System was passed on to us in a direct line of succession from its origin.

Wing Chun starts to appear in independent third-party documentation during the era of the Wing Chun master Leung Jan , making the subsequent history of Wing Chun and its divergence into branches more amenable to documentary verification. One day, she came upon a fight between a snake and a crane or other animal.

She took the lessons she learned from observing the fight between the two animals and combined them with her own knowledge of Shaolin kung fu to create a new style. Ng Mui taught her new fighting style to Wing-Chun, who used it to fend off the warlord once and for all.

Husband and wife in turn passed the new style on to others. Wing-Chun learned the Fujian Shaolin arts from her father and, from their raw material, created a new style after being inspired by a fight between a snake and a crane.

The young couple began teaching Wing Chun's fighting style to others after moving to Guangdong Province in , settling in the city of Zhaoqing. Numerous variations on this story abound.

Theories Other origins for Wing Chun have been suggested, typically involving connections to the Triads, revolutionary groups often anti-Qing , or the Hakka people of southern China.
