A few students talked about taking a course on the elections during the election with a professor who was counting the votes behind the scenes. They all felt as if they were part of the process and it prompted a lot of great discussions in class. The campus is politically balanced with an even distribution of conservatives, moderates and liberals.
Our tour guides described the students as: Ambitious, social, compassionate, passionate, and collaborative. All four of our tour guides were dynamic and incredibly busy. She attributed her success to the soft skills she learned at Peabody: how to interact with a team, how to manage up, and how to communicate effectively. Vanderbilt is located in the heart of Nashville, a five to ten minute ride to downtown and music row where all the major music labels are. Major hospitals are right on campus as well, so students have ample opportunity for research and internship opportunities.
Below is the academic profile by the numbers, but as we know, selective admissions requires more. So what makes students a fit? Vanderbilt is a great school for ambitious kids looking for rigorous and diverse academics, school spirit, a good balance between intellectual and pre-professional experiences, and a high-energy, friendly and collaborative environment located in a major city.
Vanderbilt students are social and friendly and there is a palpable sense of unity on the campus. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email. In fact, I still keep in touch with my VUceptors, much after Visions ended.
I have friends from nearly 25 different countries. Diversity comes in many forms, not just location and looks. We have students who enjoy different things, have different opinions, and different personalities. Each one is a unique part of Vanderbilt, and experiencing the diversity on campus has been one of the most rewarding parts of being a Commodore.
Free stuff! If you want to go for a classical music performance, you can go for free at Blair. Craving for Shakespeare?
Vanderbilt University Theater has you covered. Want to see Josh Radnor speak? Many students organizations also bribe you with free food and free T-shirts. I literally have 15 free T-shirts in my wardrobe. Top artists come to Nashville to perform, and I went for my first pop concert Ed Sheeran!
We have a whole undergraduate music school, Blair, which regularly stages many free concerts. We also have many student organizations dedicated to music. In fact, one of our a cappella groups, the Melodores, won The Sing-Off last year. They even went on a national tour. Seeing your classmates on TV winning a national a cappella contest? No big deal. Southern hospitality.
Tons of cool events. A melting pot of cultures, the Music City is the perfect place to be a college student. The thing that made Vanderbilt stand out from every other university I visited was the people.
I immediately felt welcomed on campus and knew it was the place I was meant to be. My parents met at Vanderbilt Medical Center, and I was born there before we moved to my hometown when I was two months old. I knew that by choosing Vanderbilt, I would choose not only a challenging academic environment, but also a diverse, passionate community that would be with me for my whole life.
I have not been disappointed on either count: I will leave Vanderbilt not only with the myriad academic, extracurricular, social, and cultural experiences that make our university special, but also with friends who will continue to support and sharpen me long beyond our days here on campus.
I came to Vanderbilt specifically with the goal of going into non-profit work after studying Human and Organizational Development. It never ceases to amaze me how lucky I am to be attending a university that financially supports its students so much with opportunities to serve.
I loved that this school had both high caliber academics and a a social life. We have SEC culture and top 20 academics… what more could you want? First, students were incredibly passionate and invested in everything they were doing —whether it was academics or extracurriculars, Vandy students throw themselves fully into every aspect of life and I love that. I also love the campus.
Finally, I love the size.
