How old is dame kelly holmes

I realised she wasn't going to come back and help me, and that me self harming wasn't going to help bring her back or help me. Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, 50, from Pembury, has revealed she resorted to self harming on the day her mother passed away three years ago.

Holmes, who won gold in the m and m at the Athens Olympics in , said she was extremely close to her mum, who brought her up on a council estate in Kent, and it took a long time for her to accept she was gone.

Kelly's father, a car mechanic, ran off when she was just one years old, leaving a young Pam to raise her alone. But that wasn't without its difficulties and, worried there was too much to cope with, Pam's parents encouraged her to have Kelly adopted. The athlete spent some time in and out of children's homes, but throughout it all, Pam was determined not to give her daughter up.

The former middle distance runner said it was 'the worst day of her life' when her mother Pam Norman passed away in Pam passed away aged just 64 in from myeloma, a form of blood cancer. Holmes explained: 'She died three years ago and it was the worst day of my life.

She was only 17 years older than me so we were very close. It took a lot of time and talking to people, making sure my friends knew I needed them to be around. We used to speak every day. While plasma cells ordinary help the body fight infection, in people with multiple myeloma the cells that live inside soft marrow rapidly develop to cause tumors in hard marrow. As it causes the tough bone to weaken it makes it difficult to develop good blood cells and platelets. As the second most common cancer in the United States, approximately 30, African Americans are diagnosed with multiple myeloma each year.

Unexplainably, black people are twice more likely to develop the disease than white people. Some medical experts believe that occupational exposure can play a part in developing the disease. Sufferers with jobs that expose people to petroleum, herbicides, heavy metals and an extensive list of other things have a higher likelihood or developing the blood cancer.

Most people who suffer from the disease are over 45 years old 96 percent. Over 65s are 63 percent of the group. Those with a family history of it are four times more at risk. People considered obese are also at higher risk. Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance MGUS has also been linked. While MGUS — the development of abnormal monoclonal protein produced by white blood cells - can be considered unproblematic, some have linked it to multiple myeloma.

She died three years ago and it was the worst day of my life. She was only 17 years older than me so we were very close. It was awful. I suffered bereavement for a long time. It took a lot of time and talking to people, making sure my friends knew I needed them to be around. Every day I long to be able to tell my mum what I have been doing. We used to speak every day. I would send her pictures every day. So not being able to tell her about all the great things that have happened, new children in the family from my brothers and sisters.

There are so many things I wish she was around for. And she would have hated the pandemic with a passion. We enjoyed having her on stage and the audience were clearly engaged - she covered a wide variety of topics in a relatable way. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from attendees. The crowd were particularly interested in her charitable endeavours. She was both humble and inspiring. Dame Kelly truly went above and beyond for the hospice on Friday and we are extremely grateful.

It was an absolute pleasure for our Fundraising Director to show Dame Kelly around the hospice prior to the event. We truly hope Dame Kelly enjoyed being involved.
